Debate: During a workout such as Fight Gone Bad, can someone perform box steps in place of box jumps and still claim they completed the workout "as prescribed?"
As Kathy shows, the demo video for the box jump shows all the variation: step-up/step-down, jump-up/step-down, jump-up/jump-down and explains that they all have the same work output. They are all equivalent. Therefore it is as RX'd.
This is amply demonstrated in many WoD videos with box jumps. The difference is how fast the movements can be performed. If you want to score 400 on FGB, you are going to have to jump to get in enough reps.
On the other hand, the variation sometimes seen, where the person jumps up, and does not fully extend at the top of the box before jumping down, is not the same amount of work, therefore doing so consistently would NOT be as Rx'd. Jumpers beware!

Have a look at this, http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_BoxJumpVariations.wmv
So I guess its the same effort but greater work rate if you jump
No. "Box Jumps" are not "box steps", and therefore not RX'd.
I say no. Box jumps and box steps are 2 different movements.
But after watching Kathy's link I think I stand corrected. It looks like a step up is just another variation of a box jump.
Damn.
By the way my hip flexors are stiffening up as time goes by. They will be in some pain tomorrow I'm sure.
I don't think this is controversial.

Pretty neat. Wish this was around back when I was in high school.
I'll use that to get in shape for flag football this fall!
